Leipzig/Halle Airport (IATA: LEJ) (German: Flughafen Leipzig/Halle) is an international airport serving both Leipzig, Saxony and Halle, Saxony-Anhalt. It is located near Schkeuditz, Saxony, Germany.

It is the fourteenth busiest airport in Germany and served over 2.61 million people in 2019, primarily on flights to European vacation destinations.

The airport serves as DHL Aviation's principal European hub and AeroLogic's key hub. Additionally, military stations for NATO and EU military aircraft have been constructed at the airport.

History of Leipzig/Halle Airport

Between Halle and Leipzig, the airport was constructed from the ground up in 1926 and opened in 1927.

Air France flew a Concorde to the airport on March 18, 1986, to coincide with the internationally renowned Leipzig trade exhibition. British Airways flew a Concorde to Leipzig/Halle two days later.

In subsequent years, when the trade show was hosted in Leipzig, both airlines operated Concorde flights between Paris and London.

Despite its name, the airport is located in the Nordsachsen municipality of Schkeuditz. A transaction between Leipzig and the Landkreis Delitzsch resulted in a land exchange.

In 2007, Leipzig acquired land adjacent to the airport, while Delitzsch acquired the airport land.

The District of Delitzsch, which is now a part of Landkreis Nordrhein-Westfalen, owns and collects taxes from the airport's grounds and commercial interests.

Early in 2008, DHL Aviation relocated its European hub from Brussels Airport to Leipzig/Halle, resulting in a substantial increase in cargo traffic at the airport.

Even though London was awarded the 2012 Olympic Games, the airport in Leipzig was upgraded due to Leipzig's proposal.

In the spring of 2013, Ryanair announced the launch of six services to Leipzig/Halle. One year later, however, all except the flights to London–Stansted were discontinued.

Due to changes in its business strategy, Etihad Regional announced in February 2015 the immediate end of its Leipzig/Halle operations, which had only begun two years prior.

All three routes were terminated, and two additional announced routes did not begin operation.

In September 2016, Pakistan International Airlines stated its intention to replace Manchester with Leipzig/Halle on their Islamabad-Manchester-New York City route in 2017 due to lower operational costs and time-saving methods.

As the airline possesses Fifth Freedom rights, this would be the first passenger service from Leipzig/Halle to the United States. Plans to utilize Leipzig as a layover en route to New York-JFK were scrapped after the airline announced in October 2017 that it would terminate all routes to the United States.

In October 2016, DHL unveiled a substantial expansion of its airport freight facilities. Two newly constructed cargo terminals expanded capacity by fifty percent.

Condor, with 55 weekly departures, is the leading passenger airline at Leipzig/Halle Airport (based on weekly departures) as of April 2018. Three Airbus A321 planes are stationed at the airport for this purpose. With 18 weekly departures, Small Planet Airlines (Germany) was the second-largest airline.

The airline stationed an Airbus A320 to serve multiple TUI Group leisure destinations. SunExpress Deutschland, which operated 15 weekly departures and stationed a Boeing B737 aircraft at the airport, came next.

In August of 2018, DHL announced the expansion of its airport facilities. In addition to the growth of the apron, a new pilot training center was proposed.

The number of workers was expected to rise from 5700 to 6000. Simultaneously, EAT Leipzig stated that it would increase its fleet size to 36 aircraft by adding five used Airbus A330 freighters.

Additionally, in August 2018, the Russian Volga-Dnepr Group announced plans to establish a German freight business at the airport.

The contemporary airport terminal construction spans the nearby highway and railroad.

It combines the primary parking lot with the check-in amenities. It is connected to a pier with multiple apron stands and six jet bridges.

Due to its small size, it provides minimal walking distances by design. There are international immigration services in the airport terminal but no international transfer area.

The airport is equipped with two runways. Access to the terminal is located south of the railroad. Runway 08L/26R parallels the road to the north of the airport.

Mid-June through early September, with a peak in the first week of August, is the most significant time of year to visit Leipzig-Halle Airport for general outdoor tourist activities.

About Leipzig

Leipzig was initially mentioned in 1015 in Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg chronicles as urbs Libzi (Chronicon VII, 25) and was granted city and market privileges by Otto the Rich in 1165. The Leipzig Trade Fair began in the Middle Ages, has attained international significance, and is the world's oldest surviving trade fair.

Documents of commercial fishing on the Pleiße date back to 1305 when Margrave Dietrich the Younger awarded fishing rights to the church and monastery of St. Thomas. These records likely pertain to Leipzig.

Numerous monasteries existed in and around the city, notably a Franciscan monastery after which Barfußgaßchen (Barefoot Alley) is named and an Irish monastery (Jakobskirche, demolished in 1544) near the present-day Ranstadter Steinweg (the old Via Regia).

In 1409, the University of Leipzig was established. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Reichsgericht (Imperial Court of Justice) and the German National Library were established in Leipzig due to the city's development into an important legal and publishing hub in Germany.

During the Thirty Years' War, two conflicts occurred near Breitenfeld, approximately 8 kilometers (5.0 miles) outside the city walls of Leipzig. Both the first and second Battle of Breitenfeld occurred in 1631 and 1642, respectively. The Swedish-led coalition won both engagements.
